Brussels Games then & now

Flasback 1992
BGS was a small sports club back then with hardly 50 members. Still they had the audacious idea to organise a gay and lesbian sports tournament in Brussels. However we only had the courage and means to organise a volleyball competition. The team representing us at that time was called the 'Coccinelles' (Ladybird in English, Marica in Spanish=slang for gay).
Expanding 1997
Not only the numbers of BGS members grew, but also the appetite for new things. The volley tournament was running smoothly, so in 1997 badminton was added. On top of that some volunteers developed a cabaret show for the party of the tournament. This has been a unique feature of the Brussels Games ever since and many come to the Brussels Games especially for the show.
Big happy family 2005-2006
In 2005 the fitness coordinator suggested to add body-condition workshops to the tournament, for those who don't like competition, but who still want to work-out. Also many partners and friends come along to the tournament and instead of hanging around without doing anything, they can taste of the different workshops to the beat of latino, hiphop or bollywood rhythms.
In 2006 two additional sports have joined the Brussels Games: tennis and swimming. Many BGS members had been waiting for a long time to join in and now their wish came true. The swimmers however decided to organise their competition only every other year.
What's next?
The development of the Brussels Games never stops. New volunteers constantly bring us new ideas and impulses. The latest idea is to add more cultural elements to the tournament. Many sports(wo)men come from far, so we want to show them some of Brussels:
- We organise our welcome evening in the Saint-Gery market hall. It's an architectural pearl and is used for exhibitions and concerts. So when our Brussels Games participants check-in, they can enjoy the building, the exhibition and the vibes of the resident DJ.
- This year you can also take part in a guided gay tour of Brussels, to discover Brussels from a different angle and see it through pink glasses.
So the 600 members of Brussels Gays Sports are looking forward to welcome you at one of our tournaments!
